Taking your dog or other trail-ready pet off-road can make the trip more memorable, but it is not as simple as tossing them in the back and hitting the gas. The backcountry has its own set of challenges, and your pet needs to be ready for them.

Before heading deep into the trails, get your pet used to riding in your off-road rig. Short drives on rougher roads help them adapt to bumps, engine noise, and the constant movement. Some dogs jump right in like they were born for it, while others need a few runs before they settle in.

Pack for your pet like you would for any other crew member. Food, water, and shelter are the basics. Keep them shaded in the heat, warm in the cold, and safe at camp. Bring the right gear to protect them from hazards that are easy to overlook—like cactus spines, sharp shale, or broken glass at old camp spots.

The trail is not a dog park. Keep your pet under control at all times. Unleashed dogs can chase wildlife, run into other vehicles, or wander into dangerous areas. You are responsible for keeping them safe and for cleaning up after them, no matter how far you are from town.
